Welcome to Morning Musings, where I drink some coffee and ramble on! As the mind wanders on some random Star Wars Unlimited thoughts, we’ll find out if I’m living in fantasy land or crazy land with these ideas..
In today’s article, I’m going to discuss five specific card designs I expect to see in the remaining 95 cards left to spoil for Spark of Rebellion.
A straight board wipe or multi-unit damage card
Currently the only card in Spark of Rebellion that can deal damage to multiple units in one-go is Overwhelming Barrage. It’s fairly standard to see a Defeat All Units card that wipes a whole board in Trading card games, the question will be if/when we see it in SWU, will it wipe the enitre board or just one lane (Ground/Space)? Personally, I expect some kind of Villain Death Star Blast that can target either space or ground and defeat all units (yours and opponents) in that lane, but we’ll see!
More cards that enable the Force trait
Senior Designer Tyler Parrot has already declared Force the best trait in the game. We’ve seen glimpes of this, with situationally strong cards like It Binds all Things, discounts on cards like Force Choke, and powerful effects on cards like Fallen Lightsaber and Jedi Lightsaber. I firmly believe we’ll see at least a couple more strong cards that synergize with the force trait to back-up Tyler’s claim!
Grand Inquisitor Targets
As it stands, there’s not a whole lot of cards that work really well with Grand Inquisitor’s ability. If we look at the spreadsheets (shoutout rowdyoctopus on discord), there’s no room with in Villain Aggression for cheap units that would potentially work with the Grand Inq. There’s a few slots in single aggresion though! If you consider splashing some Cunning with him, there’s room for 2 more 1-3 cost Villain Cunning units and several single aspect Cunning. Command was the splash color that got the Grand Inquisitor nerfed in playtesting to a 6 resource deploy, but it could still prove strong.
I expect the Grand Inqusitor to be the “Combo” style deck of Set 1, and I still see lots of potential for him to be strong!
A reason to run Galactic Ambition
It’s no secret that Galactic Ambition has been predicted by most as the “coaster” for Set 1, but the designers have teased the Villain Vigilance Leader that hasn’t been spoiled yet will combo with it in some way. Whether that leader (who we think is Iden Versio based on the blurry image from a Gamegenic ad) has some kind of base healing mechanic or event discount has yet to be seen, but there’s got to be a way to make Galactic Ambition not completely useless in Spark of Rebellion!
Burn Cards
Burn cards typically mean cards that deal damage directly to base. These are generally played in aggressive decks that try to win the game quickly. Currently we have one card that deals damage directly to the base (Fighters for Freedom), and if you ignore the restore keyword, we only have 2 cards that directly heal the base in Repair and Vigilance. I expect to see at least a couple more cards in both of these categories.
Spectre cards
Currently we have 3 units (Ezra, Kanan, Sabine) and 1 Event (Spark of Rebellion) to take advantage of Hera Syndulla’s deckbuilding ability. I expect that number to double with the remaining card pool. As far as units go, we could get a Hera unit, Zeb, Chopper, Kallus, (unlikely since we already got this Agent Kallus) the Ghost, or the Phantom. Obviously a lot of different routes they could go with more Events (or even upgrades), but I would love to see another card named Karabast like Star Wars Destiny had!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are plenty of cards left to spoil, and I fully expect a lot of them to play a large part in the Set 1 meta. With 3-8 cards or so being consistently spoiled week-to-week, it’s been a lot of fun keeping up and speculating what the Set 1 meta will look like!
What do you think about these predictions? Anything else you expect to see very confidently?
