In the past on Fridays, we would scour the holonet and post a detailed list of all the Content put out for the game in the past week. Now we point you over to SWUHolocron who does a much better job than us keeping track of all this content posted daily! You can check this link for videos and this link for articles! They also have a comprehensive list of all Content Creators that have posted content for Star Wars Unlimited found here. There’s a ton of other great resources on their site that I encourage you to look around!

This Friday we take a look at the creator of the first Tabletop Simulator mod for playing Star Wars Unlimited, His Dudeness!

His Dudeness

Tell us about yourself! What are your hobbies?

Well, I’m a degenerate gamer first and foremost. So obviously games are my biggest hobby, both digital and tabletop. My favorite PC game atm is Dark and Darker, it’s essentially a fantasy version of Escape from Tarkov and it’s pretty good.

But after gaming, live music is my next favorite thing. Nothing beats going to a concert of your favorite band. Top 3 bands I’m listening to right now are King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Phish, and lespecial. I got to see lespecial at a 2:30AM set this past Hulaween (music festival), was one of my favorite highlights of 2023.

What is your background/experience in the TCG world?

I got started on TCGs with Pokemon in the 90s. Even went to a weekly meetup at a local Borders Bookstore (RIP). Eventually that same meetup switched to mostly Magic the Gathering (in an effort led by myself). And I’ve been playing MtG off and on since then really.

But a lot of my actual TCG experience has been digital. When Hearthstone first came out I was pretty into that for the first 2-3 years or so, eventually switching to Eternal Card Game (Mtg if Mtg had been designed for a digital client from day one) and ended up putting around 2k hours into that game. And now I just play a lot of Arena mostly. I did get into Destiny when it first came out though, doing the same thing there as I’m doing here, playing a lot of TTS action before the game actually launched. But I only played through the first year, I dropped it after that. Was a lot of fun though, playing in person is definitely superior.

What drew you to Star Wars Unlimited as a game?

I was first attracted to Unlimited when I realized it was a sort of spiritual successor to Destiny. I really enjoyed my time with Destiny and love the back and forth action taking of both games. The Star Wars theme is cool but it’s not what attracted me to the game, it was the mechanics behind it.

What led to you creating a Tabletop Simulator mod for Star Wars Unlimited?

Honestly, when I first joined the community around late June, I just didn’t really like the other mods that were around. And just wanted to make the mod I wanted to play on. And I’ve got some experience making other mods on TTS so I figured, why not make the SWU mod? And it turned out other people liked what I made.

What is one feature you hope to add to the mod in the coming months?

I’d say most of the features are already in the mod right now. I’ll still be looking to add various quality of life upgrades as they come up though. I also don’t want to have a fully automated experience in the mod, I’m not trying to make a digital client here. You should be paying attention to what your opponent is doing irl and I want to be honing those same practices in TTS if I can.

How do you see yourself as a player on the Casual <–> Competitive spectrum?

I’d say I’m somewhere in the middle of that casual to competitive spectrum. Definitely lean more competitive in the sense that I want to be winning if I can, and will try to be playing a top tier deck. But I’ve never pushed for a world championship or anything like that. My highest accolade was briefly reaching rank #420 in mtg Arena the past two seasons. I might end going harder in this game, but not really sure right now.

What is one specific archetype or playstyle that defines you?

I’m definitely an aggro player. The goal of the game is to reduce your opponent’s base to zero HP, so that’s my game plan. All base all the time. And there’s something really satisfying about finishing someone off so quickly. If an aggro deck in top tier, you’d better believe I’ll be playing it. (and even if it’s not top tier I might be trying to force it anyways)

What is your process for building a brand new deck in Star Wars Unlimited?

The first step in building a new deck is deciding which leader seems fun/cool to play. In this game leveraging value out of your leader is one of the most important parts of your deck. So I’m trying to maximise that value as much as possible.

I think the worst leaders in the game right now are simply the ones hardest to extract value from during a match (Hera and IG-88). But beyond that it’s mostly trying to figure out the game plan of the deck (aggro, control, midrange, or combo) and working to reach that goal. Although I’m not much of a control or combo player, so it’s almost always going to be aggro or midrange (I secretly love playing big fatties).

What are your goals in Star Wars Unlimited as a player?

So my biggest goal of SWU is to recapture that enjoyment of going to weekly locals like I did with Destiny. Those were some of the greatest times I’ve had playing games. And now we get to add an actual good draft format to the mix. I’m pretty hyped. I’m probably not going to be pushing for a world championship or anything like that, but you never know, I might get more into it than I imagine I will.

What are you personally most excited about for Star Wars Unlimited?

That last answer ties into this question a bit, it’s definitely draft. They’ve said draft was a day one focus of designing the game, and from what I’ve seen and played so far, that seems to strike true. Cannot wait to actually have real packs in my hand to crack open during a draft. It’s gonna be pretty, pretty, pretty… pretty cool. Looking forward to lots of rare drafting bois.

What has been your favorite community experience in Star Wars Unlimited thus far?

My favorite community experience so far has been meeting lots of cool people in the discord and playing some games with them. The funniest experience was when they revealed the uniqueness rule and someone went on a rant complaining that having 8 Vaders on the field would ruin the game or something, and it became a meme afterwards that I hope never dies. #V8der

Rumor is you started a podcast, what led to that? What’s your 30 second elevator pitch to someone looking through the list of 40 podcasts and why they should check yours out?

Those rumors are true! Check out Outmaneuver on YouTube and Spotify. It came about because some of those people that I’ve met and played games with in the discord over the last 5-6 months or so, were just like, you guys wanna make a podcast for fun? And were just like, sure man, let’s do it.

The elevator pitch would be, is that we’ve got a lot of experience in the game already, despite that fact that it’s not even out yet. We’ll be slightly more competitive minded, but honestly we just plan to showcase the best of SWU. Both limited and constructed. Trying to use our early experience in this game as well as our combined experience from other card games.

Be sure to keep up with the Outmaneuver Podcast on YouTube, Spotify, and Twitter! His Dudeness is always keeping the TTS mod updated with the new card reveals and quality of life updates, and you can keep track of those in the main discord TTS Changelog channel!

That’s it for today. We hope you got a good introduction to His Dudeness and learned more about the designer of one of the Tabletop Simulator mods for Star Wars Destiny!
