Welcome to the SIXTH episode of SWU OVER/UNDER, where the GarbageRollers crew tackles various topics related to the game and decides whether they’re OVERRATEDUNDERRATED, or PROPERLY RATED. This format lets us yap about almost anything, and today, we’re gonna throw in our takes to all the various talks of the town. The game is buzzing out there, but how are people expected to form intelligent opinions without hearing from US? They’re NOT, that’s how!

As with any internet opinion, we encourage you to take these…takes (??) with a grain of salt. Let us know in the comments how off-base you think we are…but keep it professional. You know we at the GarbageRollers always do.

We’re only a week into the Post-Boba Fett world…but have we really escaped the Fetts?

Jango Fett

Justin – Jango definitely started out as underrated, with very few people wanting to test with him in a Boba Fett world. With the Boba ban though, people are finally running with Jango and realizing the tempo potential. Jango Red likely had a chance to displace Boba Red as the go-to deck in that category, but now there’s no argument. The community at large seems to be taking note of his power level and adding him to the testing gauntlets. With that in mind, I’d say the community has PROPERLY RATED him.

Tyler – Yep, he’s the #1 suspect for a post-Boba, Set 3 leader breakthrough. PROPERLY RATED

Jayson – Um, uh-oh! It’s Fett 2, Electric Boogaloo! While Jango Fett is, by LEAPS AND BOUNDS, a more fair and interesting leader than his problematic offspring was, it is genuinely very funny that some of the first scary decks to come out of the post-Boba suspension environment were Jango decks. Peak. You can’t make this stuff up. And I gotta say, I’m proud of the community for keeping this PROPERLY RATED and not shaking the rafters just yet. People seem to be hip to the fact that, while they’re definitely potent, these cool Jango decks have reasonable answers in the cardpool already. Now go slot them, because chances are Papa Fett is gonna be haunting your locals for at least the next little bit.

Boba-Free Deckbuilding

Justin – so so so UNDERRATED! While everyone was shouting at the sky for Boba to be banned, I don’t think anyone foresaw just how many more deckbuilding options would open up. While the start of competitive events soon may start to narrow the field, it’s as good a time as ever to be a Tyler!

Tyler – OMG I LOVE IT. I don’t have to spend a week building new and interesting decks only to wake up to a text from Justin saying, “I think the meta is just ‘choose your flavor of Boba’” Could not be more UNDERRATED.

Jayson –

Thanks FFG. PROPERLY RATED.

Twilight Limited Play

Justin – I think the community as a whole has UNDERRATED Limited play for Set 3. Many people state it’s simply Anakin’s world we’re living in.. While he definitely is one of the easier plug and play leaders within the Set 3 limited experience, we haven’t seen him running the tables in our area. We’ve seen many different leaders, styles, and pilots winning thus far in Set 3 limited, which leads to a fantastic experience in my opinion!

Tyler – It’s a lot of fun to get all those tokens into play, which is a lot more feasible in limited. Having been the guy who dropped the 10-resource Clone Wars, I have to endorse the format. UNDERRATED.

Jayson – I’ve only gotten to do one draft so far, but I think the community I’ve been talking to has PROPERLY RATED Twilight’s Limited experience as being particularly awesome. This is one area where I think they may have genuinely outclassed Set 1. The Leaders feel varied and balanced, the commons and uncommons are flexible and feel good to use, and multiple deck archetypes feel very much within reach in a given draft. This set really sings at the draft table.

Twilight Legendary Cards

Justin – I’m going to land on PROPERLY RATED here. Everyone seems to agree these aren’t your grandfather’s Set 1 legendaries, but there’s a lot of play within these 16 cards still. Price is largely more dictated by the abundance of product as opposed to the power level of these cards. While Set 2 had some very high power level legendaries combined with a bunch of duds, I see Set 3 having a much more level experience with a couple of stand outs.

Tyler – I have the sneaking suspicion that these cards are going to end up even less powerful than we think. And by that, I mostly mean that NTATOT won’t turn out to be a powerhouse. The rest seem like niche cards that are eventually going to get out-valued by Set 1 legendaries. OVERRATED

Jayson – I think the community has mostly agreed that this batch of Legendaries is once again not quite up to Spark’s standard. With only a couple of outliers, the prices here have dropped pretty quickly, mostly because product is plentiful and people aren’t really convinced a lot of these will find decks. But you know what? I think these are a touch UNDERRATED. There’s really cool stuff and iconic characters in here, and some cards that I think might be flying under the radar, such as Clone and Gor. They will likely stay cheap, but I think there’s more exploration and fun to come with these.

Twilight Box Prices

Justin – OVERRATED no doubt. Being able to get product is great, but online stores undercutting the margins of local stores means we tread the needle of a lot of local game stores no longer supporting the game when they’re left holding the surplus of boxes at the end of the day. Hopefully Set 4 can find a better middle ground.

Tyler – Support your FLGS people. Getting cheap cards is OVERRATED if you have nowhere to play.

Jayson – I’m not sure whose perspective this would be from, but I’ll call this one OVERRATED. While it’s cool for players that Twilight is plentiful and accessible, my FLGS had a lot of people cancel their preorders last minute because online retailers were already offloading boxes at cost. That kind of thing leaves a valuable small business on the hook for way more product than they needed.

While I wish those players (and you, dear reader) would wisen up to the necessary practice of paying where you play, I do also think there’s criticism to levy towards the publishing side. FFG not releasing Twilight in waves to distributors and not making the Legendaries a little more evenly balanced and competitive has driven these boxes too far down too early. Hopefully in future sets there’s a path forward that is more favorable to the brick and mortar game stores that keep this game alive.

4 Month Set Gap

Justin – PROPERLY RATED. I haven’t seen anyone complain about the timeline between sets within the community (other than impatient people with spoilers). FFG has landed on a good spread that keeps the game interesting without burning our wallets. I am most thankful that I’m not having to buy boosters every 3 months in this game!

Tyler – UNDERRATED. Having played both games with >4-month intervals and <4-month intervals, I have to endorse the pacing. SWU is played mostly by grown adults who don’t have college-kid-level time. Four is the right balance between “OMG, when do we get new stuff!?” and “OMG, not more stuff!!”

Jayson – There’s been a tendency lately to criticize this one, but I think it’s UNDERRATED. Sometimes the wait for a new pile of cards can feel a little long, but what saves it in my opinion is the consistently strong set design. There’s a lot to explore, and thus far, even with a very limited cardpool, we’ve been seeing final months of sets with new deck concepts still being brought out to trot and lots of variety. Boba’s suspension and an ever-deepening array of options will only make that more possible in the future. Combine that with the wallet savings and I’m personally pretty happy that we’re only on 3 sets a year.
