Spoiler season is in full swing, and we are hyped for the cards we’re seen thus far. Year two of SWU is shaking up to be better balanced than year one which gives us a flat and wide meta to play in!

Here’s some early preview cards that the Rollers are excited about.

Jayson’s Picks

Don’t look now- if you want to hit my base, you’re gonna have to maneuver past Ewan McGregor’s sick braid.

The Force trait has been packing cool tech for a while, but if all these synergies are going to pop off, it’s going to need to back it all up with value units. I love everything about this card- he’s got sick art, rock-solid value for money, and one of the easiest to keep online conditional Sentinels in the game. And he’s in my favorite color to boot! We’ve been on a bit of a lull with Obi-Wan cards since his iconic Spark of Rebellion version, but I think this one has the makings of a staple.

Speaking of potential staples…

Did Cad Bane need more incredible early plays? Maybe not, but that makes no difference to our Yellow overlords. Aurra’s sweet, lanky fingers are holding the trigger on a functional 2/3/4 with a Hidden keyword to keep her safe. I’m interested to see how relevant Hidden ends up feeling in general, but I find it promising that it would naturally have more utility later in the game when opponents have more filled out boards and might want to attack things as they get played. If that theory holds, it would give Aurra a defined identity as a solid value early play with relevant keywords and late game utility.

I think we’ll be seeing her around.

Justin’s Picks

Holy upside Batman, our 2 cost units now come with an extra health, strong traits, and a dope when defeated ability!? Count me in! The 2 power won’t always do what you want it as a 2 cost unit, but I’m really scared of these new batch of opening plays that just stick around… Pack your Waylay’s, a lot of people will be dropping lightsabers on these big butts Round 2!

I don’t know what designer at FFG thinks the hyper resilient Count Dooku just can’t exist with decent health stats (he’s not that old..), but we get yet another shielded low health version, but with a conditional ambush this time. Early indications seem like we won’t have too hard of a time turning on the force for Tyranus, and we thankfully don’t have to actually spend the force to get the Ambush ability. Worth noting, FORCE and SEPARATIST are very strong traits. This seems like a set we might see more SITH interaction as well!

Tyler’s Picks

Grogu, Mysterious Child

Unit healing has been a particular obsession of mine since the days before Star Wars: Unlimited even released. I literally wrote an article proposing a healer Grogu unit in 2023. The idea that I could play high health units, strike with them, and then heal all the damage to repeat the cycle is my deckbuilding white whale. Enter Grogu, Mysterious Child! Grogu’s 2-1-6 statline with the Hidden keyword will make him difficult to remove and give him the chance to use his miniature It Binds All Things ability multiple times. I’m especially excited to try our three-fingered friend with Han2. Not only could he bring Grogu out for two resources, but every unit he discounts on a future turn could then come with a Daring Raid stapled to it!

Anakin Skywalker, Champion of Mortis

I’m excited about Anakin both as a value unit in Blue decks, generally, and as a power tool for some niche decks like Chancellor Palpatine. 12 total stats is what we’re looking for from a 5-cost ground unit, so his ability is costed at a cool 1 resource. How much is it actually worth? Well, take a look at Make an Opening or Equalize. The costing of both those cards suggests that a -2/-2 effect will run you approximately two resources. That means Anakin gives over curve value with only half of his ability active. Now, if we can find a way to get both aspects into the discard pile, then we’re talking a HUGE payoff. That’s before we even mention his less tangible, but no less important benefits like having three relevant traits, the ability to potentially split his ability onto two different units, or how that ability bypasses shields or restrictive text like Lurking TIE Phantom. There’s so much to love about this version of Anakin!
