I’m really excited to build decks in Star Wars: Unlimited. Moreso than I was for Star Wars: Destiny- and that’s a big statement because I loved Destiny. The reason I’m so excited is the possibilities afforded by the new aspect system. It opens up so many more- 43% more to be exact!

Let’s break that math down. Destiny had 3 basic colors (Red, Yellow, Blue) and a Hero/Villian dimension. Your deck could only have one of Hero or Villian but any combination of the other colors. Graphed out, that color palette looked like this:

The middle 3×3 square features 12 unique color combinations- 6 on each side of the Hero/Villain divide. To this, we added the two rainbow deck types for a total of 14. To those who played, you’ll likely remember this facilitated a wide range of deck possibilities- and the designers expanded this as the game went on with true neutral decks and decks that crossed the good/bad divide. My only complaint was the presence of the rainbow decks. Those allowed too much freedom in deckbuilding that let kitchen sink decks with “just the good cards” thrive. In total, Destiny stacked up very well against a classic like Magic: The Gathering which has a 15-combination color wheel.

So where does that leave SWU? As I said, it’s 43% better than Destiny. That’s because SWU has a solid 20-archetype spread (and no rainbow decks!) which should allow a lot of different playstyles. Here’s what that looks like:

The 4×4 square features 20 unique color combinations- 10 on each side of the Hero/Villain divide. Unlike Destiny, SWU bans rainbow decks (yay!) and supports mono-color decks natively through lucrative double-aspect cards like Command and Aggression. It’s that built-in mono-color deck support that has me higher on SWU than games like Lorcana that have slightly larger color pies (21 combos).

SWU’s larger color pie, lack of rainbow decks, and native support for mono-color decks has me really excited. The designers will have a lot of design space to work with as they release a reported five years of already planned content!

What are you excited to build? Do mono-decks get you hyped too? Let us know in the comments!
