We at Garbage Rollers have been long overdue in bringing you a deck tech for arguably the most popular deck in the game – Boba Command. It was the most played deck in the inaugural SWU TTS tournament. It also received new cards last week with the drop of Cartel Spacer and Crafty Smuggler. Those two additions lead me to believe this deck is close to optimized and might resemble its full-format self. As such, it’s time to break it down!

We’ll try and keep the deck updated as it evolves on our SWUDB account.

This deck has more events than average with the goal of triggering Bossk and Greedo’s abilities, which rely on having a steady supply of events. Luckily, there’s no shortage of great events in these colors!

Play Style

In a recent game with my buddy Justin, he jokingly referred to this as “goodcards.deck” and there’s some truth to that. Playing highly efficient, value cards is very easy in this deck. Nearly everything, from Greedo to Overwhelming Barrage is over curve in one way or another. You shouldn’t have to resource very deeply to get that value either. Fett’s Firespray is the most expensive card at 6, which is also the natural stop point for Energy Conversion Lab and Seasoned Shoretrooper. This resource efficiency is magnified by Boba’s leader ability which can give us an extra 1 to 2 resources to spend each turn. Low-cost cards like Recruit and Shoot First will help you take advantage of these extra resources.

Let’s talk about a few of the spicy combos Energy Conversion Lab enables in this deck. The first is with Superlaser Technician. Having him kamikaze into a unit round 2 can put you seriously ahead on both available resources and board state. The second is with the Boba Fett unit, which when ambushed out in the 2nd round can usually kill an exhausted 2-cost unit- which again- puts you ahead on board state. A rules quirk allows you to use ECL to give Ambush to Fett’s Firespray and then use its “when played” ability to ready it. The obvious synergy between Firespray and your leader makes it a powerful finisher, able to get 5 damage that often sets up lethal damage in a following round. There’s also fun to be had with either of shielded units and ECL, which allows them to ambush and then get their shield.

Overall, this deck is a Swiss army knife. It has a ton of answers for all kinds of problems in it, and everything combos together in a positive way. If you’re looking for a deck that is easy to play, but hard to master, this is definitely it!

What kind of cards are we looking to add?

  • A 7-cost finisher – Right now, this deck uses 6-cost AT-ST and Gladiator Star Destroyer to compliment Fett’s Firespray at the top end. While we don’t want to stretch up to 8 resources for a card like Chimaera, a powerful 7-cost like Luke Skywalker or Count Dooku would be a welcome addition.
  • Useful 1-cost events – Anything in this category can trigger Bossk, Greedo and make use of Boba’s extra resources.

What cards are on the chopping block?

  • This category is conspicuously hard to populate for this deck. Everything feels like it has a place. The last exits were the generic TIE Fighter and Viper Probe Droid.

Additional Flavor you could slot in

Everyone has a bit spice they add to their builds. Here’s a few options you might consider swapping into the list above.

  • Admiral Piett – If you want to pile on 6-cost ambush synergy, Piett is your man. He can ensure your Firespray has ambush, even if you used ECL early in the game, or give Ambush to AT-ST or Gladiator Star Destroyer.
  • Agent Kallus – Agent Kallus is a really solid card with both ambush and card draw. He competes in the 5-slot with Bossk, but you may want him anyway.
  • ResupplyIf you want to supercharge the deck’s ramp, and go a little high on the cost scale, this is your card.

That’s all for today! Have you gotten any games in with Boba yet? How are you building yours? What’s your favorite deck to play so far? Check out some gameplay below if you want to see it in action.

  1. […] for Control, but we’re going to lose to other flexible decks with strong arithmetic, like Boba Green, if we don’t have something like Overwhelming Barrage to help us catch up. Whatever is out […]

  2. Do you have a rules citation for the ECL/Fetts fire spray rules quirk you mention? I’d like to be able to point to something when this is questioned.

  4. I have a really hard time against Iden, Chirrut red and Luke red. I don’t know how to play against them. They always have an answer/removal.

This makes some sense. Control decks will usually have the upper hand against a midrange deck like Boba. You might look at adding some off-color Cunnings to give it more of an Aggro push.
